2009

Anne has spent the first 6 weeks of the year receiving grandparent training in Tasmania with Lucas Ambrose, who arrived on Christmas day. She notices that around a baby, life is simplified. Somehow he brings her back to what is important. The pressure to purchase, achieve, be a certain way, falls away to highlight the power and invitation a newborn has to give and receive unconditional loving, understanding and choice. As chief nappy changer, the photo below shows something of the rewards received and the fun available during that so called menial task.

For Nina this year has already produced lots of juice to be nourished by and bones to chew on.

The juicy bits being; Prana festival, a delightful gathering of really cool and kind people, enjoying the natural beauty and each other; camping, at one of our favourite places with great friends for a few days, river plunging night and morning - yummy; Parihaka  peace festival, which is a great place to express your anger and out rage at the present injustices of the world - the music was fantastic.

And the bone to chew on; she had an accident falling while rock climbing in the south island the day before setting out for a 7 day trek over the peace trail in the Southern Alps.  And of course, there is always a silver lining even in an old rusty box, so what has she learned from her fall? Be conscious where you step, be present to every step, assess the risk before you set out.

Fear has its place - it can tell us when things are not right.  It's not good to avert your vision to avoid looking at what you are scared of (she suffers from vertigo and had the great idea to just go fast as possible and don’t look down) not smart when you on a narrow ledge; and sometimes things just don't go as you planned - Surrender!

The good news is, that the trail did get walked by two companions while Nina held the space with her leg in the air.  And more recently has been walked by Beryl our beautiful work colleague and friend.  No doubt her amazing smile, steady way and generous nature would have been a gift on the journey over this old trail. Thank you for all those who walked for peace..

At home two of our national treasures have died after long, fruitful lives. Sir Ed leaves a memory of a man who epitomizes all that we most cherish and want to believe in ourselves about being a kiwi – that combination of being extraordinary and ordinary, the generosity of spirit, and awareness of what’s really important. Of  Hone Tuwhare, Bill Manhire said - He can sound within the space of a couple of lines as if he's both at church and down at the pub.

The elections in US look like they will deliver a more left wing, more peace promoting president, and either the first black president, or the first woman president. I was in Australia when the new government began their term of office by offering an unqualified apology to the aboriginal people for the injustices of their past. It made a strong impact. People were talking about it in the street, the main papers published the speeches in full, and most people watched it on television. When the leader of the opposition began to make some justification for what has happened, two thirds of the people in the room where he was speaking quietly stood up and turned their backs to him. I have a hard copy of those speeches if anyone is interested.

At Co-operacy we have an exciting year ahead. We expect to have the first graduate of our 2 year part time Wholeperson Facilitation Diploma this year, and we have a full schedule of training for personal, group and organisational development. Here’s the first half of 2008. For a fuller version of this letter see the link on the home page.

Now is the best time to reflect on your year. Last week we asked ourselves:

  • What are some things that have I achieved?
  • What am I proud of?
  • What did not get achieved?
  • What’s next for 2008? ………you may like to ask those questions also.

We have great plans for 2008. You may want to mark them in your diaries.

Another piece of poetry. An excerpt from David Whyte's "House of Belonging"

This is the bright home in which I live
This is where I ask my friends to come
This is where I want to love
all of the things it has taken me so long to learn to love
This is the temple of my adult aloneness
And I belong to that aloneness
As I belong to my life
There is no house
Like the house of belonging.

May your song harmonise with those around you

Warm thoughts and energy from us to you

2007

Greetings everyone

Spring is in the air and here’s the latest from Co-operacy. First of all, we want to welcome to the team, Nina Hawkins, who has been working alongside Anne on Co-counselling courses for the last 18 months. You can see her on the attached flyer. Nina has completed two of the Co-operacy Diploma modules and is working with Anne on the next Whole Person Facilitation Training Programme. Nina is a clarion call for authentic connection. Welcome Nina.

An engaging way to start an event, conference, meeting or session: Anne has just returned from a conference of leaders at Tauhara, on the shores of Lake Taupo. The opening 15 minutes was given to poetry shared by Bill Taylor, who is a great lover of poetry. After listening to 9 or 10 pieces, the room was electric with inspiration. Brief introductions to each poet or topic were interspersed with excerpts from some of his favourites including this excerpt from Mary Oliver’s “The Summer Day”. He is interested in more work of this type. You can contact him at billtaylor63@gmail.com

I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

Success: The Whole Person Facilitation programme in July was such a success that we are offering another of these courses this year, 29th October to 2nd November. For more information, content and feedback from this programme see the attached pdf (best printed from the file or viewed at 100%) Here’s what some participants have to say about it:

“An essential and valuable course for implementing and managing organisational change”. I discovered proven effective facilitation techniques and processes to inspire and create a strong group culture” Leanne Fleming, Branding marketer

“This course has provided me with great clarity around the role of a facilitator …and enabled me to make great advances in my ability.” Stephen Harrison, Consultant

“My previous facilitation background had me single-handedly drive a group to reach a particular outcome I had pre-determined. During Co-operacy, I was exposed to a radical new front of room possibility….. being a guardian to the emergence of group potential. What a revolution in thinking… giving power back where it belongs. This has had the effect of gently graduating me from the rudiments of a dictatorial catalyst to the subtle refinement of a philharmonic conductor. A breath-taking demonstration of flawless facilitation in action.”        Rachel Taylor, International business coach and trainer

Whole Person Facilitation is an experiential programme based on the newly revised, best selling book The Art of Facilitation (Dale Hunter with Anne Bailey, Stephen Thorpe, Hamish Brown, Random House 2007). This is a practical, workshop where participants bring the book to life by experiencing a living laboratory based on the concepts of the book. Everyone has the opportunity to facilitate and be coached while they are facilitating.
